TEACHER SPOTLIGHT :
PATRICIA RIPLEY FITNESS
CELEBRATING 46 YEARS TEACHING FITNESS IN NEW YORK CITY.
I was born in Newark, NJ and grew up on the Jersey Shore. I attended Monmouth College (now Monmouth University) in Long Branch, NJ. and worked as a waitress, bartender, nightclub manager and Assistant Band Manager (for Bruce Springsteen).
At 24 I moved to Manhattan, and in 1971 went for an interview at an exclusive East Side exercise studio, The Lotte Berk Method on East 67th St. In 1972, after 4.5 months of intensive training, I soon became their top instructor. Later I became the summer manager, and manager of the Lotte Berk Bridgehampton Studios. I credit a long history of sports involvement for being so fit to achieve such a fast rise in the fitness industry. Also I had expert training by my boss and mentor, Lydia Bach. Lydia took a rough stone and polished it into a diamond! She taught me the most advanced exercise techniques, and mentored me culturally and socially. She also trained all her teachers in many aspects of dealing with celebrity clients. As a result I felt comfortable in "Manhattan Society" and had close and professional relationships with my students. I worked hard and helped Lydia grow her business.
Now I teach a "functional fitness" class at Ripley-Grier Studios' 131 West 72nd Street location. My class is a combination of techniques, which defined the fitness industry from the 70s to the present day. I gear my class to older (middle aged) adults who are fitness aware, and want to achieve lifetime fitness habits; and also younger beginners. I also teach many older dancers and actors who wish to stay fit.
I currently offer three master classes per week and my husband (Butch) teaches a Total Gym circuit training class. My class consists of warm-up / cardio, power weights, leg / hip work at the barre, core / abdominal and floor stretches to music. And I am certified for teaching group classes and personal training. During class I always give personal attention to each student.
I could not believe my good fortune finding a career in fitness. It has kept me healthy and active. It is my lifestyle. Skiing, golf, tennis, mountain biking, running and body boarding have all been possible due to being fit and I endeavor to pass that fitness philosophy to my students.
We are starting our Spring enrollment and will make space for new students (I limit my class size).

What's going on with this weather? Three Nor'easters in less than three weeks?! Spring is around the corner and there's still snow coming down. We turned the clocks forward and that helps having more daylight in the evening.
Spring break for the university I attend is coming up. We were going to go to Scotland for vacation, but unfortunately my Dad got sick and we had to postpone the trip. We're looking to fit in Scotland during our summer trip to Scandinavia.
At the beginning of the month I was ready to take my road test for the first time and I passed. I bought a car the same day I passed the test. It's a 2015 blue Volvo XC60. Exactly what I was saving for!
My Dad is home from the hospital and recovering well!

Greetings.
This has been quite the month so far. The weather has been so strange and Spring seemed to be coming, and then BOOM! Back to winter.
The clocks moved forward (a positive event), I celebrated my 46th year teaching fitness, and Butch and I celebrated our 35th year together. We are also into our 31st year in the rehearsal studio business. March is a month of anniversaries!
Butch had a health scare this month and ended up spending week in the VA hospital. He came home on Tuesday 3/12 and is doing much better. It was a tough week for Jeannie and I, as well as our staff. He is an important part of all of our lives. He will have to take it easy for another month and he has some ongoing health maintenance plans. As a result, we had to cancel our Spring Break trip to Scotland, but we will add it into our Spring trip in May.
In the spirit of the Year of the Dog (my sign) we are doing a big cleaning and de-cluttering in the Administrations offices at 520 this month and moving some offices around. In Feng Shui practices, the year of the Dog and the number 27 is very powerful. The advice is to clear your spaces; Clean out, discard, give away, sell, or move 27 items. It goes with Spring cleaning. Look around your homes and offices and see what can go. "Clutter" clutters the mind and interferes with new ideas. Only keep items that remind you of positive feelings, events and memories. Organize your files, create new ones and toss old papers and records.
Of course, Spring is for new beginnings, as well as reviewing New Year's resolutions. Outdoor fitness / sports plans should be made (ie: walking, riding, jogging, golf, tennis, volleyball, yard games, swimming, basketball, bowling, skating, dancing, curling, etc.). It becomes easier to get the gym in better weather. Stretch every day, Plan at least a ten minute fast walk two times a day, then add 20 minutes three times a week for extended cardio fitness workouts. Begin your Spring/ Summer garden in your yard, on your balcony, fire escape or even your window sills. Growing and caring for plants gives you peace of mind and calms your emotions.
Wishing everyone who celebrates a Happy Saint Patrick's Day, Easter Season, Passover and Women's History Month. And a very special wish for my dear husband, Butch. Happy Birthday Peanuts!!  Regards, Patricia
